What Is a Shentong Bone?

Every Tian Can Tu Dou novel is built around one central power system, and Shentongzhe (神通者) is no exception. The official synopsis — the only substantive material released before serialization — introduces the Shentong Bone (神通骨), and the book's title itself comes from the people who bear one. Since the synopsis exists only in Chinese, here is what it actually says and what it likely means.

"All living beings may grow an extraordinary bone, upon which wondrous arts can be inscribed and carried — granting mighty power: to command fire and summon wind, to roar with thunder and wield lightning, to swallow the sun and pluck the stars, to subdue demons and imprison gods. This is the Shentong Bone. Those who bear it are called… Shentongzhe."

Three elements in that paragraph do all the worldbuilding work: the bone, the inscriptions, and the scale of power.

Breaking down the setting

The bone is a lottery, not a reward. "All living beings may grow" (世间生灵，体生异骨) suggests the Shentong Bone appears in people — perhaps any living creature — rather than being earned through cultivation alone. That is a departure from the pure effort-based systems of his earlier books, and it sets up his signature conflict: what an underestimated underdog does with a gift (or a lack of one) that fate handed out arbitrarily.

Inscriptions are the progression system. The bone "can carry inscribed wondrous arts" (可铭刻承载诸多灵妙之法). Read plainly: a bone is a vessel, and the arts inscribed on it are the actual abilities — which means a character's growth likely comes from acquiring, upgrading, or combining inscriptions. Expect rarity tiers, inheritance hunts, and ruined-legacy dungeons; those are the engines this author uses to pace a thousand-chapter story.

The power ceiling is deliberately cosmic. The synopsis climbs from battlefield-scale (fire, wind, thunder, lightning) to mythic scale (swallowing the sun, plucking the stars, imprisoning gods). That is the author's usual promise to readers: the weak boy you meet in chapter one is standing in a world whose top tier can shake the heavens, and the story is the climb.

How it fits his earlier power systems

Tian Can Tu Dou has built one signature system per book for eighteen years. Battle Through the Heavens runs on Dou Qi and its ladder of ranks, from Dou Zhe up to the near-mythical Dou Di. Martial Universe and The Great Ruler use their own energy systems (Yuan power and spiritual power respectively), each with clearly named tiers. Dragon Prince Yuan centers on Genesis Qi, and Absolute Resonance — completed in November 2025 — on resonance arts, inborn affinities that can be refined and evolved.

The Shentong Bone looks closest to Absolute Resonance's formula — an inborn trait whose value depends on what it carries and how it is developed — rather than to the pure cultivation ladders of the early books. If that reading holds, the interesting questions for the first hundred chapters are: what is inscribed on the protagonist's bone, who put it there, and what happens when two Shentong Bones clash.

What we don't know yet
